Hello,

Well... after 6 hours of trying and restoring my system about 7 times,
after completing a lengthy e-mail to HP Support only to get a message
after clicking continue that the e-mail was not sent (page not found
or unavailable or some crap), AND after getting no help whatsoever
from HP tech support, here I am.

I upgraded to XP and lost some of the functionality of the shortcut
keys on top. The thorn in my side was that the "next track" button in
the CD/DVD group (top-right) brought up the Windows calculator instead
of advancing the track.

The original state of my system (after installing XP but before I
started looking for HP drivers) had my keyboard listed as a Microsoft
keyboard under Control Panel : Keyboard : Driver/Device.

I found 5 different drivers, 4 on the HP site, one in another
newsgroup:

MM_KB1020.EXE
See: http://h20015.www2.hp.com/hub_search/document.jhtml?lc=en&docName=bph06267

MMK_XP.EXE
See: http://h20015.www2.hp.com/hub_search/document.jhtml?lc=en&docName=bph06267

MMK_XP.EXE
See: http://www.annoyances.org/exec/forum/winxp/t1060391124 (Sep 20,
2003 post)

SP23913.EXE:
See: http://www.hp.com/cposupport/personal_computing/support_doc/bph06596.html

SP23891.EXE:
http://h20015.www2.hp.com/hub_search/softwareDownloadIndex.jhtml?lc=en&softitem=pv-10327-2&sw_lang=en

The first one I tried was SP23913.EXE I believe. Just before the
install was complete it said a sleep file was missing. I restarted,
logged in, and my system was virtually frozen. Only the mouse moved.
Had to restore system to previous date to get things working.

Next I tried MM_KB1020.EXE. The install proceeded at a snail's pace at
the 67% mark, then finally finished. Once I restarted it was the same
story as my attempt #1 above. Had to restore system to previous date
to get things working.

What is the difference between all of the different driver files
above? Which one is most recent? Which one(s) should I install?

I also found a link somewhere to an old Netropa driver that worked,
but this is the one that contantly pings your computer and supopsedly
is spyware. It worked fine, even had the old on screen display which I
had forgotten about, but I was worried that the constant pinging was
slowing down my internet. I have ZoneAlarm and I disabled some of the
files within MSCONFIG, but still...

I'm not sure if I tried downloading SP23913.EXE or SP23891.EXE once I
was running the old Netropa driver I had downloaded. I had originally
tried one or both of these when my keyboard was being detected as
Microsoft which is perhaps why my system hung. I don't feel like
trying ANYTHING at this point unless I am fairly confident it will
work. That's enough System Restores for me...

After I downloaded MM_KB1020.EXE and MMK_XP, before installing, I had
first deleted the existing keyboard device/driver via the control
panel then rebooted my computer. But when I restarted, XP detected my
keyboard (probably as a Microsoft keyboard again) so perhaps when I
installed the driver, there was a conflict between what Microsoft had
detected and wanted to install and the new driver.

Anyone know why the MM_KB1020.EXE does not work on my machine? I am
using XP Pro.

Thank you in advance for any assistance of any kind,

Ken

23913 would have been the right driver, BUT:

Prerequisites:
Your PC must be using the original Windows XP operating system that was
shipped with your PC. This driver update does not work if you have upgraded
the operating system.

This is from:
http://h20015.www2.hp.com/hub_search/softwareDownloadIndex.jhtml?lc=en&softitem=pv-13165-1&sw_lang=en&prodId=hppavilion77564&cc=us

There is a page for the 98/Me version, which theoretically won't work for
you:
http://h20015.www2.hp.com/hub_search/softwareDownloadIndex.jhtml?lc=en&softitem=pv-10327-2&sw_lang=en&prodId=hppavilion42707&cc=us

I think you will find that XP handles the multimedia buttons if you leave
the HP keyboard driver uninstalled. But you would lose the shortcut
buttons. I was pleasantly surprised to find that Me handles the MM buttons.

I believe that if you do a google seach on "hp keyboard xxxx" with the xxxx
being the model number on the underside of the keyboard, you will find the
drivers for XP.
