I have two HP printers ( HP Photosmart 1000 and an Officejet G85xi) on my
system running WinXP. Each printer worked fine on my system until I used
USB and attached both printers. Now neither will work. It seems there is no
drivers for either nor any twain drivers. What gives?

Cindy,

Please supply more information. Did this happen as a result of an upgrade to
XP? If so, no surprises here. Or did you switch one or the other printer from
a parallel port to USB? When you do Start->Control Panel->System, then look at
the devices in Device Manager, are both printers shown as properly installed or
is there either a little yellow exclamation point or a red something-or-other
next to the entry for either printer? ... Ben Myers

You don't provide a whole lot of information but if your experience is
anything like mine, it all comes down to following the installation
instructions to the letter. USB still isn't as "plug and play" as they
would like you to believe.

If your units worked just fine connected by a parallel cable, it really
sounds like a botched USB installation. The quickest and easiest way of
resolving it would be to delete the software and remove the drivers for the
unit then go back and CAREFULLY follow the USB installation instructions
that came with the unit step and by step.

Hope this helped,

Dave

Dave,

I concur with your views about USB not being very PnP. If one plugs in a USB
device and there are no drivers for it on the system already and the drivers are
not on the Windows install CD, this is a recipe for disaster.

The general rule of thumb is to install USB software first, then plug in the USB
device. But, as you say, follow the manufacturer's instructions for installing
USB software and devices VERY meticulously. And maybe the install will work.

The makers of USB 2.0 devices seem to have learned from previous USB devices,
and Windows XPee does a respectable job on USB installs. Still lots of room for
improvement, though... Ben Myers

I attached my Cannon BJC2100 to the USB while leaving my Deskjet on
25-pin Parallel, and they work separately just fine like the other one
is not even there. Can even print two documents simultaneously!
