View Full Version : 6mp printer reads 22kb file as 515kb - why?
Using Windows ME. I have a one-page Word 97 doc with a simple 25 row x 4
column table. Only half of the cells have two words in each (Arial 9 pt
font), and the other cells are blank. There is nothing else on the page.
The file size reads 22kb, but when the HP 6mp printer begins to print it
reads it as a 515kb file. Does anyone know why, and is this normal?
Thank you.

This appears to be normal. Beginning with Windows 95 and/or Office 95, the
amounts of data produced by either the printer drivers or Excel became very
bloated. Back then, I upgraded a client to a hot new Pentium system with
Windows 95 and Office 95. A laser printer that had worked perfectly well under
Windows 3.1 and Office 4.2 suddenly began to suffer from premature ejection. Of
paper, that is, with only a half page being printed. The solution was to
upgrade the printer's memory to the max possible, so that the printer's memory
could retain an entire page image (plus PCL or even PostScript commands in
process) until the image was ready to print.
Microsoft has never explained this phenomenon, and I never did have a chance (or
the funding) to research out which was the culprit, printer drivers or Excel.
BTW, printing extremely complicated web pages can also exceed the capacity of
printer memory.
Since then, I haven't gotten exactly rich, but I've sold lots of printer memory
upgrades, and I typically equip refurb LaserJets sold here with the maximum
amount of memory possible.
Your LaserJet 6MP has the capacity to add another 32MB of memory over and beyond
its factory-installed 3MB. I have 16MB 72-pin SIMMs here compatible with the
6MP and other older LaserJets. HP once charged a small fortune for them. Not
just any 16MB SIMMs will do. If you would like to buy a pair, let me know.
