View Full Version : Vectra VL420 HD swap

I'm trying to swap out a drive in a Vectra VL420 with one from a 450 mhz
non-HP system with Windows 2000. It appears that the software boot block
protection might be preventing the new drive from completing the boot
process (warns about a possible boot block virus).
The drive I'm trying to use has been scanned three times a week with Norton,
so I am relatively confident that it does not contain any virus. I'm
considering changing switch 9 to the off position, but have not yet tried to
see if this will solve the problem.
My question: what steps I should take when swapping a good drive from a non
HP computer to a Vectra VL420? I know I will probably need to do some
changes for the network interface, video card, etc, but are there also any
Vectra VL420 specific items I should be aware of? (BIOS related?) Also, if I
do get the drive to work by turning switch 9 off, what do I need to do to
get it back to where I can switch it back on again?
Thanks

It's possible that the BIOS has boot block virus protection enabled, and so it
gets confused when it finds a different hard drive with a different boot block
on it. Try inhibiting boot block virus protection, either thru the motherboard
BIOS CMOS setup or with a motherboard switch setting, whichever is appropriate
for this computer.
Your best bet may well be to reload an operating system from scratch. In
addition to the obvious differences of video card and NIC, the VL420 motherboard
does have different chipsets than the motherboard to which the hard drive was
previously attached. The approach is to boot up the system/hard drive in safe
mode, install the necessary drivers, then reboot. With luck, you may end up
with a functional Windows 2000 system... Ben Myers

Thanks. I think I will take the time and do it right. It won't be that
difficult since my C: drive is only used for the OS and everything else is
on different partitions.
