hi everyone,

i have inkjet 1700 connected to computer with w2k operating system
and... it's not working as it should be.
the problem is i cannot establish connection *from* the printer to my
computer. i can print, text docs and images, easly, but i can's get any info
about technical condition of my printer, like amount of ink in cartridges
etc.

i've tried three combinations:
- connecting via parallel cable and adding printer with 'add printer' wizard
- connecting via parallel cable and running setup.exe from hp's cd-rom
- connecting via usb and running setup.exe

every time the result is the same: i can print, but no printer-info i can
get.
when i run 'HP Color Inkjet CP1700 ToolBox' i can see an information saying:
'cannot monitor DOT4_001'. where dot4_001 is a kind of virtual printer port,
i guess (but i have no guess why the hell printer just can't be mounted
under LPT1?)
when i want to 'check connection with the printer' i get the alert-box:
(translated from polish, hope you all
get the meaning) "this port will not be transmitting information about
condition of the printer"

at first i thought it was a fault of an old parallel printer cable or sth,
but the same errors occur when using brand new usb cable.

what's wrong? or what do _i_ do wrong during the install? anyone knows? had
same errors?

best wishes,
