Just inherited an HP Writer 300c DVD+RW/CD-RW combo drive from a neighbor
who upgraded his system. I'm trying it out with a non-HP desktop running
Win98SE. I also installed InterVideo WinDVD and Instant CD-DVD (from the
same installation disc as WinDVD).

So far my PC recognizes the new 300c under Device Manager. However, I have
some questions:

1. Trying out a commercial DVD results in a frequent "popping" sound coming
from the external speakers every several seconds. This does not happen when
I play the same disc in my theater system's DVD player. I also do not get
any "popping" sounds whenever I play a CD in my CD-ROM player (nor did it
happen when playing or rfecording CD's with the CD-RW burner I just
replaced). What is causing these sounds and what can I do to eliminate or
minimize them?

2. I found a 3rd CD-ROM device created under Device Manager/Hardware
Profiles. It is named "VOBID InstantDrive CD" and re-creates itself each
time after I "remove" it and re-boot my system. I cannot access it as I can
the CD-ROM player and the 300c. It appears to exist in RAM. What is it
(for)?

Paul,

I can speculate that the popping sounds may be causes by a system too slow to
keep up with the speed of the data coming in from the DVD player. How fast is
the computer? What other software is running in the background, i.e. loaded
into the system at startup? How much memory in the system?

Other software running in the background steals processor cycles and slows down
the system's ability to handle the DVD data stream. No enough memory could
affect the manner in which the DVD player handles the data stream... Ben Myers

Thanks, Ben. I had closed all TSRs that I could in the systray but I'm
running Win98SE with an 800MHz clock and 386MB RAM. Probably the processor
speed is the culprit, as you suggested.

Well, the other possibilities lie in the software used to play DVDs and in the
player itself, potentially defective... Ben Myers
