View Full Version : RDRAM Memory for HP 7970 Question

After contacting HP several times, I can't get any information about
purchasing more memory for the HP Pavilion 7970. I know that it takes RDRAM
(which is rare, and expensive, and must be installed in pairs), and I would
like to add 1Gig, or at least an additional 512megs.
I've search all the top sites, but none of them can tell me if the RDRAM they
sell will work in my computer. Are there any product specifications I should
look for when I shop? I've found some good deals at Newegg.com, but I don't
know which ones will work for my system
Any help would be great!

Later,
Shaun!

RAMBUS RDRAMs are relatively straightforward compared to all the variations of
SDRAM.

The specs for the Pavilion 7970 state that the maximum memory is 2GB, and the
the memory can be either PC800 or PC600.

Here, then, are the variations:
PC600, PC711, PC800, PC1066, the various speed grades
ECC, non-ECC

AFAIK, ECC RDRAMs will work in a system that does not require ECC. The higher
the number, the faster the speed grade. Regardless of the name-brand
manufacturer stickers on RAMBUS memory, the large majority of it is made by one
manufacturer: Samsung. I have also seen NEC and Infineon RDRAMs.

As you stated, RDRAMs must be installed in exact match pairs, for the most part.
There are exceptions, in some Pentium 3 computers.

So... Get yourself as much RAMBUS as you can afford. Buy PC800 non-ECC from a
reputable supplier. Be prepared to pay a chunk of change, which is why the rest
of the industry pretty much strong-armed Intel (the major force behind RAMBUS)
into developing chipsets for the much less expensive but just about as fast
Double Data Rate (DDR) SDRAM.

Systems with RAMBUS memory were rightfully promoted at the time as the high
performance personal computers, workstations and servers... Ben Myers
