View Full Version : Strange HP 920C Cartridge Problem

I have an HP 920C that is doing very weird things with any new
cartridge. I'm about to junk the printer, but I'll be stuck with about
$90 worth of new cartridges. I've changed the black ink cartridge many
times before. This time when I changed it, the orange ink light kept
blinking. I returned the cartridge and tried another. Same thing. I
called the HP Support guys who were nice enough to try to help me even
though it's out of warranty. They said try another new cartridge, that
both were defective. I tried another and the same blinking light and no
print. BTW, what is even weirder is that when I put the old cartridge
back in, the light stops blinking and it prints (though faintly, because
that cartridge is out of ink). I called HP Support again. He walked me
through all of his fixes and nothing works. I've now tried everything
with 3 new cartridges and it just keeps blinking. But when I try the
old cartridge, the light goes out. There must be someone out there who
knows why this is happening. Anybody up to the challenge? And what am
I going to replace this printer with? Another HP?

Ok take out both carts put them away safe, pull pwr cord so as to leave the
carriage in the centre, now clean CAREFULLY the gold contact pins with
cotton buds use a few to ensure clean contacts look for traces of Ink on the
cotton buds.

Just to be sure that no one has overlooked the obvious- do you have the
correct cartridges? In your case #15 or C6615A or C6615D.

Not only did I check every box, I inspected the cartridges for their
serial numbers to see if I could find any differences. I looked at
everything possible on the contact points. I'm just stumped (as was the
tech and his supervisor). I have now tried four different new cartridges.

But, how would that explain why the one old cartridge still works, but
not any other?

Make sure you are using the #15 black cartridge. The #45 cartridge looks
similar but is not compatible with the DeskJet 920.

Also, I just remembered that the HP carts are "dated" and wont work
after that date. It is NOT encoded on the cart. The cart could be
dated to expire on 10-2004 but the "internal" could be 01-2004. Try
to get a cart from a different supplier - might be that the ones your
trying are from "old" stock

This is not true for the DeskJet 920 or any printers that use the #15 cartridge
(or any of the cartridges that integrate the printhead and ink supply). There
is an expiration date for the cartridges, but this is the warranty expiration,
two years from the date of manufacture. There is nothing in the printer that
will cause the printer to reject a cartridge simply based on its age. It is
possible for very old cartridges to fail even if they are "new in the box"
after years of storage, but it is very unlikely to be the case that three
cartridges in a row would have a problem.

Sara, make absolutely certain that all of the blue protective tape is removed from the cart's, if
any little bit is there it will disrupt the contact...just a thought...
