Anyone knows the approximate value of HP V-Class computers? I'll get two
V2500 (each with 16x PA-8500 440MHz and 4GB RAM) and one V2600 (16x PA-8700
550MHz and 16GB RAM) within the next two weeks and since I was thinking of
selling two of them I would get an estimation about the value of these
machines.

Hi,
See on ebay.
Only big companies buy such monster and i am afraid that they prefer to buy
new computers.
Im my opinion, you can get anything from 1000? to 20K? on second (third)
hand market without invoice.
In 1998, a V2600 was certainly quoted around 400K? on HP list price.
In 2004, HP still ask 1400? for a 512MB DIMM RAM suitable on a Superdome
(4-64*PA8700).
Alain.
? means Euro or $ if you prefer.

Benjamin,
The sum of (most of) the parts may be more valuable than the whole... Ben Myers

If the CPU's and dimms fit into a N-class they will be worth more as the
v-class itself :).
For the maintenance costs of a V2500 you can buy 2 7410 systems every year.

I was under the (possibly mistaken) impression that the PA-8700 didn't
go into the V2600. If the frequency of the CPUs is indeed 550 MHz, I
believe that is a PA-8600.

these opinions are mine, all mine; HP might not want them anyway... :)
feel free to post, OR email to raj in cup.hp.com but NOT BOTH...

I haven't seen any V2500/V2600 on ebay lately. There were a few Exeplar
SPP2000, though, but these have 180MHz-CPUs and even don't run HP-UX 11...

Not necessarily. I regularly sell used Sun equipment to bigger companies.
Not always the budget allows to buy new, or often there is the choice
between new and slower or used and much faster...

Invoice isn't a problem as I have my own business. But I never dealt with
V-Classes before, so I'd like to know what they usually go for on the second
hand market.

There is in my company more or less 10 Superdomes, a lot of N class and
still some old E and K class
I have see in one of the datacenter room something looking like a freezer:
it's was in fact a V-Class.
We never buy second hand server but it was a big surprise for me to see
that HP itself sell refurbished part at the same price than new one:
we have place an order of 500.000$ (yes 5 zeros) just to get 20GB of memory
and 3 Superdomes cells (4*PA-8700 each). And these 3 cells was used part !!.
And i repeat we have never ask to buy used part from HP.

That's usual business not only from HP but also from IBM, Sun or SGI.
Especially for bigger systems defective parts are brought back to factory to
get repaired and re-certified. When they are finished they are as good as
factory-new parts.
It's not that these parts are generic things that are used in a lot fo
different systems. And for highly specialised parts it's too expensive to
produce new every time a customer needs a spare part.

And that's why the sum of the parts may be more valuable than the whole. Some
of the 3rd party parts suppliers and HP themselves may be willing to pay some
fairly serious money for many of the electronics parts inside, leaving you with
a computer carcass for disposal... Ben Myers
