View Full Version : HPLJ 4M & JetDirect J2552 & Mac OS X = work?

I've been trying to hone in on a workable solution to hooking up my Mac
G4 running Panther (OS X 10.3.2) with my vintage (but still working) HP
Laserjet 4M.

Can anyone confirm that HP's JetDirect J2552B ethernet card for the 4M's
MIO slot will communicate with the G4 via a D-Link DI-604 ethernet
router?

In particular, I can't figure out if the J2552 card for the printer
needs some firmware update that may no longer be available. (I have a
serial port card in the MIO slot currently, so that would have to go. )

Both the JetDirect card and D-Link routers are available on eBay for
decent prices, but I don't want to go ahead and buy them without
confirming that this solution will work.

Many thanks!

In theory, at least, the JetDirect 2552B ought to work. To use it with a Mac,
you'll need to use the LJ4M control panel to configure the IP address and all
other network parameters. Use a FIXED IP address for the JetDirect in the range
supported by your D-Link. For example, if your D-Link is set up to use
192.168.1.1 as its gateway, a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0, and a DHCP range
from 192.168.1.100 to 192.168.1.199, choose a JetDirect IP address outside the
DHCP range. Something like 192.168.1.50. Your Mac ought to find it easily
enough... Ben Myers

That is very helpful. Many thanks. One step closer!

What I am still not sure of is whether the LJ4M's control panel will be able to
configure for an ethernet IP address, etc. Since the printer didn't originally come
with an ethernet card, it seems to me (but what do I know?) that it's ROM wouldn't
have that configuration in it already. (In checking just now, the control panel
has a config menu for serial and parallel, but none for ethernet.) So the last
piece of the puzzle is how to enable the LJ4M config menu to include configuring
for ethernet.

If a LaserJet does not have a JetDirect inside, its built-in firmware is smart
enough not to try to set up a JetDirect. But if you add a JetDirect, the
LaserJet firmware will enable you to configure the card... Ben

Add the Ethernet card and check the menus again.

You can also Telnet to the device and establish the TCP parameters directly.
That worked on a J2591A.
