View Full Version : Won't boot

I've come by (been donated) a Vectra VL400 which I had intended for a
club I'm a memeber of but I can't get it to boot even far enough to get
at the BIOS. All it does is play a 12 beep theme repeated 3 times and
then shut down. Nothing is written to the screen.
I even tried exchanging the HD for a working one from another machine in
the hope it would boot off that but same story.
Can't find anything on the HP website - max number in their beep codes is 7.
I did wonder if it was something to do with the case intrusion switch
but one of the docs I flipped through said that merely warns you on the
next boot - so perhaps it's not that.
Anyone have any advice/suggestions?

Your cache memory is bad and your computer disabled it for you. You could reactivate it by pressing -Ctrl- -Alt- -Shift- -+- , but you probably shouldn't. Instead, replace your cache memory.
or
Your problem lies deep inside the CMOS. All chips associated with the CMOS will likely have to be replaced. Your best bet is to get a new motherboard.

Would this be the same on my Pavillion XT963? The stupid thing will
sit at the 'HP Invent' screen and stall there. Ocasionally it will
boot. I checked the BIOS backup battery and it's OK at 3.06 volts and
all internal wires seem to be OK. Any thoughts? By the way, a 963 is
a celeron 1.2g 128meg ram and 40 gig HD.
Thanks
JEP
