View Full Version : Strange sounds while my HP 6545c is off

Does anyone have any idea what might be causing this? My 4 and a half
year old hp 6545c (windows 98SE) has recently started making strange
sounds in the middle of the night while it is off (not in standby or
suspend). The fan comes on, the LEDs light up, it puts out a static
or popping sound over the speakers, the cd drive spins, and sometimes
it sounds like the hard drive is spinning. The only ways I have been
able to stop the noises is by turning the computer on, or pulling the
plug. Has anyone heard of this happening? Is my computer haunted?

Nope, I never heard of this, but it is indeed possible. How about a cheap
solution and just throw it on a power strip and switch it off from the
strip?

Cheers!

Sounds like a faulty power supply switch.

Like it does when you first turn it on, right? Go into the BIOS and
make sure it's not set to boot from the network. It may be seeing
traffic from your cable modem that's waking it up. This is also a
security concern.

Yes, you need to disable the "wake on (LAN, USB, whatever) options in the
BIOS. You most likely have been hacked, also. Good luck.
