I have a HP laserjet 5m that works for the most part,
but I can not access any printer settings from the keypad.
It seems to be locked. I have it direct connected using
the parallel port to a windows xp machine.
Thank you for any help.

Michael,
Does the LJ5M control panel (keypad) display status messages when the printer is
printing? If so, then maybe its cable connection is loose, and one or more of
the signals from the control panel to the printer circuit board are not making
it through.
I am not aware of any feature to lock the 5M control panel, because it is
essential to the recovery from paper jams, unwanted print jobs, and other
exceptions.
It could also be that the small circuit board on the control panel itself has
failed partially.
What happens when you push the large green "GO" button? Does the printer's
display change from READY or POWERSAVE ON to OFFLINE? If not, then something is
quite wrong with the electronics or even the mechanical parts... Ben Myers

the display seems to work fine. It shows all messages.
Nothing happens when the 'go' button is pushed. I check all
cable connections and reseated all of them. the printer works
through windows, but still unbale to access any keypad
functions. Once, on power up it, after initialization, the
displayed showed offline for a few seconds, then switched to
ready.

Michael,
I've never seen those symptoms. The only solution would be to replace some the
the parts such as the control panel assembly and cables to see which one has
failed. It is probably the switch underneath the green Go button which
failed... Ben Myers

I found the problem and managed to get it working. Seven
traces on the bottom of the keypad board were cracked. I
managed to bridge the cracks with solder. (I am an experienced
electronics tech).
Thanks for your input and pointers in trying to help with this
problem
