View Full Version : data recovery fun

I'm trying to recover data from an IDE hard drive for a friend of a friend.
It's a 17.1 GB Quantum fireball made for a Compaq Presario. The friend
claims the pc was hard shutdown due to a power outage and when it came back
up, the hard drive was no longer working. The bios will no longer see the
drive. The drive is not making any "click of death" noises, it just isn't
communicating. It will see other drives that I have tried in the pc, so the
pc is good. Tried the drive in another Compaq pc, no luck.

Since I had nothing to lose at this point, I swapped the logic board with a
similar drive (6GB Quantum), and the bios hung trying to detect it. The led
on the drive flashed in a repeating pattern of 10 short flashes. My guess
is that the board isn't compatible but I was wondering if this might work if
I found a board which more closely matches the same size drive? I am trying
the freezer method right now...stay tuned. I haven't tried playing with the
jumpers on the drive yet - just thought of that. It's set to CS right now,
maybe if I try it as a Master or Slave? Am I wasting my time?

Thanks,
G
