It sounds like a hard drive crash. Do you have a backup?
If the drive itself is physically damaged you will not even be able to
reformat it.

But before you replace the drive, you mentioned that you could access it in
another pc. If it is ntfs you might have trouble getting to the data on it
due to security. Are us using the same user account and password to get
into the 2nd pc? If not, go ahead and create the same account/password you
had on the crashed pc, login with that account and try again to access that
d: drive.

Another thing you could try if you can get hold of a copy of Ghost w/ Ghost
Explorer....make an image of the failed drive and see if you can explore the
image file. Let me know if you need help doing this.
IF you can make an image of it, at least you will know the drive and data
are probably good and you can go from there.

good luck,
G

Thanks Barry - I did think of that one but unfortunately I can't get it to that stage to get that option. It kicks into the blank screen with flashing cursor the moment it looks to boot from something. It will boot from CD rom e.g XP cd - but I do not want to re-format it as I will lose data. If I install over the top do you think it will wipe my old My Documents folder inserting a new one - wiping the old data ?
