Also, I seem to remember hearing that computers have two fans -- true? The noisy fan on my emachine is on the whole time the computer is on (it is not an intermittent fan).
Most cheap systems only have 2 fans, one in the Power Supply (PSU) and
one on top of the CPU heatsink.. If you get a plastic drinking straw or roll
up a narrow roll of paper you can poke it into the rear grill on the PSU and
stall the fan, if the noise stops, you need a replacement PSU, if noise
continues, you need to open the system and check the fan on the CPU
heatsink. See other reply for advice on replacement.
