Ok, here's another one. (BTW, THANKS for all the greate advice in
group).
My 401k (Vanguard) downloads the transactions every two weeks as it
should. When I accept them (they are correct) it then tells me that
the shares in Quicken differ from the shares online. For example,
Quicken will report 100.126, but online it will be 100.12557. Quicken
wants to add a placeholder for the difference and then wants me to
enter in where these shares came from or went to. I cancel that step
because obvisouly I didn't sell or buy 0.0003 shares. It looks like a
rounding error on sombody's behalf.
Should I continue to cancel the placeholder step? Is there a better
way to handle this?

I have this with at least one investment account; my problem is
that the financial institution is not downloading transactions
with share quantities to the same degree of accuracy that they
are carrying in their system. I don't think you will want to
leave the discrepancy; it can cause you problems when it comes
time to sell.
You can either attempt to get the correct share quantities from
your fi and modify your individual (Buy/Reinvest/Etc.)
transactions accordingly, or you can enter some sort of
adjustment transaction (you do not necessarily have to use a
Share Adjustment transaction; you could use a Buy since you
probably did "buy" those shares, or you could use an Add Shares
transaction). [I always try to get the correct transaction
quantities from my fi ... I have them trying to track down .0002
shares at the moment :) ].
I think you should also ask your fi to download transactions
with the same degree of share quantity accuracy that they
maintain in their system; Quicken (and OFX) can handle the extra
decimal places (Quicken can handle up to six places to the right
of the decimal).
