View Full Version : Windows XP clean install

Forgive my ignorance but I've got some questions about installing XP:
I've done many "clean" installs of Win95 and 98. You know, full format of
the HD, then full install from CD.
I take it (this is what I've read anyway) that all THAT is now "out the
window" (no pun intended) because Win XP has some security features that
make you actually contact Microsoft for their permission?
What about upgrades from say Win 98? Will the full version of XP simply load
only what's needed for the upgrade or do you really need the XP upgrade CD.
Also, I understand that the XP CD is bootable and a system with a
motherboard that can't boot a CD just can't run XP. (you can't access that
CD with real mode drivers loaded from floppy, can that be true?)
I'm asking because I'll be running into this soon and want to be prepared.
Is there a document somewhere on the web with this info?

thanks, ken
