The license for TutboTax Premier 2004 lets the customer "use the Software
only to prepare, print and/or electronically file up to five federal 2004
tax year returns..."

Is the limit of five enforced by the software? If so, how?

Background: I use TurboTax for only one return each year. But I usually
keep a number of *.tax files for various "what if" situations. It would be
unfortunate if the software stopped after saving five different files.

I found this on the TurboTax support site.

Number of tax returns you can prepare with TurboTax
(desktop)

As stated in the TurboTax Software License and Services
Agreement, desktop (CD-ROM and download) versions of
TurboTax let you prepare an unlimited number of tax returns
as long as you are not preparing them on a professional
basis (i.e., for a preparer's or other fee).

IRS regulations mandate that each user is limited to a
maximum of five electronically filed (e-filed) federal
returns and that no more than one state tax return can be
e-filed with each e-filed federal return. For complete
information, please visit the IRS Web site www.irs.gov.
