The problem turned out to be the motherboard. Some of the capaciters went
Jiffy-Pop. I was a bit dissapointed since the mobo is only around a year
old. Anyhoo, I was able to track down another super socket 7 mobo after
some sleuthing and got the PC functioning

news:bga09q$mqnsd$1@ID-201199.news.uni-berlin.de... Hi, I have a 550mhz AMD K2 running WIn98SE that I use as a development (programming) box. A couple of days ago it started having a problem powering up. When I turn on the PC, the HD LED lights up and the LEDs for the CDs blink (as normally initializing). But the HD LED stays lit and nothing else happens. The monitor doesn't come out of standby or
anything. No activity whatsoever. If I turn off the PC and turn it back on again,
it will usually power up and boot as normal about 80% of the time. When it doesn't start the second time, it does the third time. Once the PC is running, it operates fine. This problem always occurs on a cold start.
If the PC has been off for a short time, sometimes it boots up OK and
sometimes the problem occurs. This is something that just started happening a few days ago out of the blue. I haven't added any hardware or software to this box in quite some time. No settings (CMOS, Windows, etc.) have been changed. Everything
was working fine until a few days ago. The MB is a SOYO SY5E series with the VIA MVP3 chipset and was new out of the box a little more than a year ago. The CPU was new with the MB. The HD is a 20gig 7200 Seagate Baracuda,
also new out of the box a little more than a year ago. ATI All-In-Wonder 128
AGP video card. The BIOS's Advanced Config. and Power Interface is disabled (the VIA MVP3 chipset and Win98SE don't play well together if its
enabled). I changed the IDE ribbon cable for the HD, swapped IDE slots on the MB
with the CD drives. The problem persists. So, I'm wondering if anyone here
has experienced a similar problem and determined what the cause was. I just have a *feeling* that the HD or MB may be going south, but I felt it best
to solicit advice here from those with more hardware expertise than me before
I go buying things unnecessarily. Thanks!
