Hi all,

I keep getting the error messge -

standard mode error: fault outside of MS-DOS extender EC-000 CS
037F...etc etc

when i try to install win98 in my machine.

description follows:
PC stopped on one fine day. after that its not booting from HD.
so i started it using a boot floppy(win 98).found some irregularities
in the parition table. formatted the whole disk. and tried to install
a new copy of win98 from the CD.
when i run d:\setup.exe after few initial checking/scanning, setup
throws this
error ie - standard mode error: fault outside of MS-DOS extender
EC-000 CS 037F...etc .
i replaced HDD and memory and tried. but of no use :(.
is this erro due to a virus affected BIOS. what is the solution.
mother board is mercury KOB 815e TFSX and BIOS - Award v6.00PG
How to deal with a virus infected BIOS.
I have checked lot of docs from Microsoft KB. but its not giving any
hint for this particular problem.(so please dont post Microsoft KB
links here)
thanks in advance
- Asharaf

Sounds sort of like your computer's A20 memory line has failed. The A20 line
is used to maintain full 8086 compatibility when in Real mode. If the line
cannot be toggled on and off, you can't go into Protected mode. This line is
part of the motherboard chipset, and really the only thing I can see would
have probably caused this is the age of the motherboard.
