Hello,I'm trying to use a HP DVD300i burner on a Compaq Deskpro EP/6400 withWindows 2000. According to the reference guide, the Intel 440BX boardsupports ATA/33 mode for both IDE channels, but CD units run in PIOonly on any channel. The BIOS is updated and shows the HD as Ultra DMA and the DVD asEnhanced DMA. IDE controller drivers are updated to April 2001.Is it a problem with the board (it dates back to about 1998), orshould I look for specific drivers?

You don't need extra drivers for a 440BX chip set with Windows 2000.
You merely need to configure the system to use DMA with an optical
drive.

Logged on as an Administrator, go to Control Panel -> Administrative
Tools -> Computer Management and select Device Manager. Find the entry
for IDE ATA/ATAPI controller and expand by clicking on the "+" sign.
Right-click on whatever controller the DVD burner is hooked to
(preferably as the master device on the secondary controller. Select
Properties, and then Advanced Settings. Enable the option for "DMA if
available." Click ok all the way out and reboot as prompted. Then go
back to the same panel and check that the setting was applied.

I couldn't find the DMA option because... would you believe it?
The pull down menu for the transfer mode shows a single line with two
microscopic scroll buttons on the right I hadn't noticed before.
What a stupid interface. :(

Thank you,
