Greetings,

Why is Microsoft so hysterical about Linux?

"SUNNYVALE, Calif., Nov. 10, 2003 MontaVista Software, Inc., the
company powering the embedded revolution today announced that
MontaVista® Linux® Professional Edition is the chosen operating system
(OS) for Sharp Corporations (TS:6753) HG-01S (also known as Galileo),
a home digital information server. The HG-01S is the core product in
Sharps vision of a connected ubiquitous home network, and can be
connected to devices such as PCs, mobile phones, and TVs."

Just at the moment, it is billed as something to which you can connect
a PC. Sooner or later, it will dawn on consumers that the PC is
superfluous. It has already dawned on Microsoft.

For those of you who think Microsoft tells Intel what to do, Intel is
an investor in MontaVista.

Sure they should be worried, they have an inferior product. :-)

But they've been able to get away with an inferior product because
most people are intimidated by the alternative. I actually think
MontaVista is a greater threat to Microsoft than RedHat/Novell/SuSE.
No one will care what's inside the box, but it won't be Windows.

Well you have to remember people are intimidated by ANY computer. It's just
they get used to windows and don't want to change. IMHO Linux is so much
easier to deal with most things as windows hides the real problem from me
or someone who could actually fix it, they sure won't!

Exactly so. People will buy a home entertainment center, not a
computer. If they wind up wanting it to do their taxes, too, it will
be able to do that, too, but that won't be what sells the box.

Windows has snookered practically everyone into confusing the user
interface with the OS, because, in the case of Windows, the user
interface is, by design, all scrambled up with the OS. That will be
the downfall of Windows. You can build anything you want on top of
Linux. Underneath the user interface is something you don't have to
sign a non-disclosure agreement with Microsoft to understand--or to
fix.

IMHO, it's long been a troubled marriage. This one looks like it's time
for Microsoft to throw a few more bones to AMD. Maybe this is revenge
for X86-64 support in Windows.

Yep, it can be as simple or bloated as you want!
