View Full Version : Identify mystery SDRAM?

Cleaning out a storeroom today I came out with over 200 sticks of what
appear to be double-sided 72-pin SDRAM modules. They fit an SDRAM slot,
but aren't recognised by any of several PC motherboards I tried.

The PCBs are labelled "16m x 24 SIMM LOGIC 530-0035766". Google doesn't
find anything helpful.

The chips are NEC 4217400-60, which were used by several manufacturers
of PC ram in the mid nineties on 16 and 32MB SDRAM modules, and several
motherboard manufacturers validated ram modules using these chips -
thanks Google :-)

Anyone know what these are, and/or why they don't work on a PC motherboard?

TIA

They are 32MB FPM RAM - 72 Pin SIMMs - 60ns made by NEC.

They will work in older 1st generation PCs which only supported Fast
Page Mode RAM.
Later EDO (Extended Data Out) RAMS came out which were used on newer
motherboards still using the 72 pin SIMM format.

Some newer motherboards will work with both FPM and EDO RAMs and some
will only accept EDO RAMs. It looks like the motherboards you are
trying them in are the ones that will only work with EDO RAMs.

My bad - they fit in an SDRAM socket, which would make them 168pin
DIMMs, not 72 as I originally stated.
