View Full Version : Problem Reconciling Checkbook

I've been using Quicken 2003 Basic for about 18 months. I recently
downloaded about 4 months worth of transactions from my bank which I entered
into my Quicken register. I always reconcile my checkbook using the paper
statement. When reconciling, after I enter the statement closing date, the
account beginning and closing balance for the statement that I want to
reconcile, I'm noticing that there are checkbook entries in the reconcile
window that don't belong there (entries w/dates after the statement closing
date) and entries that do belong there ( entries w/dates before the
statement closing date) that are missing. Why is this happening? I've
never had this problem before.
Thanks..

If you never had the "problem" before, it was only a
coincidence; it's not really a problem.
There is no reason to exclude transactions whose transaction
date falls outside your statement beginning and ending dates;
the beginning and ending statement dates cover the dates the
transactions cleared the financial institution which is often
not the date of the transaction in your Quicken register.
I believe Quicken will show any transaction as eligible for
reconciliation if it has not already been reconciled and has a
posting date during your statement period. To see the "posting
date" for a transaction, right-click the transaction, then hold
down the CTRL key while left-clicking "Copy Transaction".

Thanks! Your response was very helpful. What seems to have happened was
when I copied a recurring monthly transaction, for example from the month of
August with a August posting date, to a new register entry and then changed
the transaction date to lets say December, the sources posting date remains
with that new transaction. So, when I'm reconciling August's bank
statement, that newly created December transaction appears in the reconcile
window. I have to manually change the posting date for it to be removed
from the window. Is there a way to copy transactions without also copying
the posting dates? I've been copying records by right clicking in the
record, selecting copy and then pasting into a new record? Is there a way
to add a posting date field to the register?
Thanks for the help...

I do not know of anyway to create a copy of a transaction that
does not carry along the "Downloaded" flag and the "Date posted;
manually changing them is the only way I know.
And and far as I am aware, there is no other way to see the
"Posting date" but by the method I indicated ... unfortunately.
I think this field is important and should be made visible in
the register and in reports ... but I appear to be in the
minority.

Yes. it would be nice if Quicken would allow users to add a posting date
field to the data base. How did you know how to access and change the
posting date? I new nothing about this date and it's significance until I
read your post. I searched the Quicken help index and couldn't find a topic
on it either.

A fellow named Bill Pierson who used to post here and who used
to work for Checkfree was the first person I learned it from. I
have never seen it mentioned in any Intuit/Quicken help or
documentation, but it is referred to quite a few times in the
archives at Google.
