I have a Lite-On LTR-52327S CD writer that has always worked well for the
3-4 years I have had it.
I am running Windoze 98 SE.
Yesterday, the Lite-On stopped being able to recognize audio CD discs,
either factory-made or ones that I have written using that drive. I have
tried using Exact Audio Copy, Click'N Burn, and a couple other applications
that play audio CDs, and I always get a message such as "no disc", "disc not
found", or something to that effect.
The interesting thing is that the Lite-On can read data discs just fine,
including CD-RW discs. The data discs can be read using Windoze Explorer or
the "Disc Explorer and Drive Properties" feature of Click'N Burn.
I have another drive that is a CD-ROM and it can recognize and read the
audio discs that the Lite-On cannot recognize.
I have tried removing the drive in Device Manager, rebooting, and letting
the operating system detect the drive again, which it does, but it still
won't recognize an audio disc.
I do have good security on my computer (antivirus, HW & SW firewalls,
spyware detectors), but the bad guys are always coming up with new ways to
hack into computers. I don't think I have ever played one of those Sony
discs with the spyware "feature".

it died of old age? :O) Seriously, there have probably been so many
advances, and prices have changed that it's probably better just to
get a new drive.

Could you try the drive in another computer to rule out the drive?
Seems I remember having this problem a long, long time ago. I don't remember
what I did to fix it.
Ever had Adaptec Easy CD on there? I seem to remember there were files
dropped by Adaptec software that caused problems when other burning software
was on W98SE.
I had to rename certain files (*.vxd) to let other software work. I wonder
if that's involved in your problem? Nero used to describe the situation back
when there was Nero 4. I don't know if those help files are still at the
Nero site.
Seems like one of the files had "help" or "helper" in the name.

Thanks for your suggestions. My next move is to put the drive in another
computer and see what happens.
Sadly, I did have Easy CD Cremator software on this computer, but that was
many years ago. After finding out how pathetic the software was I took
several hours and removed all traces of it (including extensive Registry
editing). That was probably six years ago, and the Lite-On is the second
CD-RW drive that I have had on the computer and both worked well until the
recent problems with the Lite-On.

Gee, last time I used Easy CD my house collapsed,
my dog bit me, my wife shot me, then I drowned

Do yerself a favor. Avoid this junque like the plague.
Hell, you could burn better CDs yourself with a needle,
a cigarette lighter, and a magnifying glass.
