need starting point for floating licences in distributed enviroments
Hi NG,
i'd like to have a starting point (book, or better a product ;-) for
floating licences.
I think this is a standard problem and i'd rather like not to write yet
another LM.
AFAIK FLEXlm is one commercial product but it seems to create mixed
emotions.
The App consists of many components that are distributed over a network
that cooperate to deliver the service. This may even be redundant to
ensure operation in case of terrible things happening like
hardware-crashs or network-splits.
The goal is to prevent customers from excessively using unlicensed
features or quantities without disrupting service in case of hardware or
network trouble. Balance tends clearly to reliability of service rather
than enforcing limits. (At least for a certain time until infrastructure
is up again)
So 1-n backup LM-Servers might be a good idea.
The licencing api needs to be available for Linux (new and old glibc)
SCO OSR5 and all kind of Windows based Hardware starting from W2000

You should look into LM-X. The software already supports about 15 platforms
and it should be no problem to support all the platforms you might want.
Also it does not come with 700 pages manual so it should be easier to go on
with then flexlm.
As for functionality it should be solveable too. Onsite training is also
available so you can have it all explained if required. :-)
