Default Objects won't change attributes [AI9]

Hello,

I'm having an intermittent problem with AI 9 (I occasionally had the
same with AI8 and, as far as I can remember, with AI7 too). I mustbe
doing something wrong, but I cannot figure out what -- didn't find any
answers on the web, either. Nor in the manual.

Occasionally (especially with a complex drawing), it seems to be
impossible to change the attributes of an object (polygon, but for the
first time it hapened to me with a text, too -- twice yesterday !). To
be more specific :

- I have a selected polygon;
- I select select a new attribute (fill or stroke) from the atribute
palette; in the bottom of the "tools" palette it *does* appear
correctly, but on scree nothing changes -- the polygon keeps the same
fill/stroke. Even if I change to something obviously different (bright
red...), or if I cycle with Ctrl-Y into or out of the "preview" mode.
If I print my illustration, the said polygon keeps the old attributes,
whatever the tool palette says.
- Sometimes, saving/closing/reopening the file is enough to cure the
issue : when I re-open the file, everything is Ok. In other occasions,
copying the said polygon and pasting it to a blank file is enough to
make it re-editable. Sometimes, both are needed (copying the polygon
alone in a new file, then saving and reopening the new file).

The same happened to me with text :

- I had a text (in plain arial)
- I used the eyedropper to select the color of a nearby polygon (which
had a stroke but no fill), to match it;
- I tried to switch fill and stroke of the text, and nothing happened
-- the tool palette said my text had a fill but no stroke, but on
screen obviously the reverse was true (it had a stroke, of the right
properties, but no fill).

Any hint would be welcome -- this is not unsurmontable but quite
annoying.

Thanks

JF

Ps- using french version, not sure about the english names of the
tools !
