I am trying to run a Sparcstation 5 with a sunvideo card. It looks like the
card will only run under solaris 7 and I am concerned about security here.
Any suggestions?

If it's a 501-2232 or a 501-3019 then the notes only indicate you need
Solaris 2.3 or higher.
What version of Solaris do you want to install?
What security issues are you concerned about?

The system is up and running with 5.7 and at least the SunVideo app runs. I
am concerned that it may not be as secure as later versions. However the
Solaris 5.8 won't run the SunVideo card. I would like to run secure
versions of ftp and telnet and shut down other inetd.conf services. Does
5.7 have any major vulnerabilities?

If fully patched it should be as safe as S10 I think.

But have you tried Solaris 8 or 9 with Sunvideo, if it does not work its
a bug for Sun to fix I think.

I've tried with Solaris 8. There was a message referring to obsolete
graphics libraries. Don't remember the details but it would seem that the
demo SunVideo software was written with soon to be obsolete software.

If you know of any editable source for the SunVideo, I would appreciate
that.

BTW

Solaris 9 would not load on the sparc 5, as I recall.

Forgive the basic question, but where are the security patches for solaris
5.7

Joe

I know that atleast the Xil library was planned to be removed but it is
still running under S10!

Did you perform a full install?

I think so. I played around with it a bit.

You recall wrongly. :-)

Solaris 9 was the last version that ran on the SS5, though.
