This is all new to me, but your advice makes sense.
Let me give you some history. My background is with Macs and mine died
recently. A friend had this spare RStation sitting at home and gave it
to me and I must admit that the platform and the OS intrigued me,
particlularly since I had never used it before. So I accepted both the
offer and the challenge. She also gave me all of her software, quite a
lot actually and a brief print out which got me started with the
operating system. I was told that this machine accepted PCI cards and
had 128MB ram (EDO ?), but according to my friend, the person that sold
her the computer, incidentally the person that assembled it (now out of
business) did, in fact, have a 256MB ram module in his personal RS7500
- apparently the only way to upgrade this particular motherboard. If
these are rare and my problem is not ram related, then this is all a
moot point, but I will try your suggestions, including changes to the
monitor definition file. SInce the 7500 doesn't have separate VRAM (and
don't apologise for your potential omissions, its my lack of
understanding that stands out here!!!!), is it then possible to assign
ram to the video display or am I being naive ... again?
(I know this is possible on some PC's with on-board graphics.)

The OS automatically assigns RAM for screen memory. If you left click on
the rightmost icon on the icon bar (the icon could be an Acorn or a cube
with a 4 in it or possibly something else depending on the OS version) the
Tasks window will come up which shows memory allocations. If you scroll
down to 'System memory allocation' you should see the 'Screen memory'
item. If you use the 'Display manager' (next icon along) to alter the
resolution/colour depth from low values to high ones you should see the
allocated screen memory change.

The OS must be 4.03 or later on a RiscStation - so cube or cog.
