A 'plain webcam that can display well in dark'...do you want it to
'display well in dark' or do you want 'night vision'?...Two different
things. Logitech cams with 'Low light Option' do a reasonable job in low
light levels, but in total darkness (where 'night vision' would be
needed), then forget them.
Two things you have to remember:
1) In the absence of light, you will need to illuminate the area for the
camera to be able see something. If you want it to see in total darkness
then this will need IR. (Forget the green images we see on TV from Iraq
or other war zones...those cameras use light intensifier technology to
'see' in the dark...the man made equivalent of how cats eyes work.)
The camera will also have to be responsive to very low light levels, (.1
to (ideally) 0 Lux).
2) 'Plain webcams' were/are not designed for this purpose (to 'see' in
the dark).
While it can be done with a 'plain webcam' (providing it's image sensor
is suitable), you would have to provide it with external (IR)
illumination. I was experimenting with this a couple of years ago, and
built 3 IR LED banks, each consisting of 30 IR LEDs to provide the
illumination but, quite franky, it is not worth the effort.
In my opinion, a security camera with inbuilt IR capability, or a high
end IP camera (with IR capability) is the best option.
Currently I use a security camera (cheaper & less effort!) with 20
inbuilt IR LEDs.
