As the pizza over slice is sitting in my cupboard gathering dust, and I
dont have an Empeg Car MP3 player, they certainly didnt

Cheers,

Does anyone else remember this or am I in a world of my own? Aaron I remember seeing one of those, I think it was at Epsom one year, after Acorn left the scene.

I have an empeg Car, as does a friend of mine. They're great gizmos.
empeg was eventually bought out by Rio/SONICblue, who was eventually
bought out by D&M, who then got bought by some MP3 silicon company.

Alas, one of the first things that Rio did was axe the completely unique
and good product, and had their team work on software for all of Rio's
awful ones.

I have no idea if they're still going as an organisation, writing code for
MP3 players. They were based in Signet Court (the business park of
minuscule offices that Castle were at for a while) when I knew them. At
least one of the guys there's run off to do his own PR company of some
sort, and another's now one of the bosses at the UK arm of Akai.

Hello, I was wondering if any one's built an ARM powered MP3 player (preferably running RO) for in car use? I would like to do this to replace or supliment the radio/cassette in my van. I'm not sure I've got the knowledge to design such a beast but I have the practicle skills (soldering, PCB etching etc) to build one from a circuit diagram. If any one can offer any help/thoughts please get in touch.

Not RO but ARM is the gp2x (see www.gp2x.co.uk). This runs a reasonably
recent
version of Linux (cut down) but its farily easy to interface to (especially
with the breakout box), its also got a very nice clear design. If I ever get
my old bus running again I'm going to not only have one of these as a player
(knackered leafspring suspension + CD == nof fun) but also as a digital
dashboard.

Its cheap(ish) and requires very little mucking about to make it useable

Dom

Are you sure? Can't find any mention of ARM on the website, only Amiga :-(

I could have missed it though, still mightilly peeved after attempting the
GranTurismo license tests after the battery in my memory card went flat and
lost all my data, grrrrr!

Thanks for pointing it out though, if it is ARM powered then it's certainly
interesting and worth investigating.

I'll keep an eye on it but it's about 100 UKP out of my budget just now,
would rather save that up towards an Iyo/A9. It's a justification thing
really, I can justify 40 quid off ebay but not that sort of money when I
only do about 3k miles a year and usually listen to the music from the
engine so it wouldn't get /that/ much use. Plus it'd need a seperate amp.
or a headunit with aux. in which kind of defeats the purpose as any such
unit would be an MP3 playing CD unit which appart from the whole CD vs.
solid state issue is a bit of duplication I can ill afford. As I say, I
will keep an eye on it and as my situation changes it may become more
appealing.

Cheers, Mike....
