Default Is my iPod battery dead?

I've had a clickwheel 40GB model for about 18 months. It's
had moderate use and has never given any trouble.

Recently I let the battery totally discharge for about a month.
Now I can't get it to store any charge at all.

It will only start up when connected to the AC adapter. Then
the charging icon will animate but the battery doesn't actually store
any charge. If I go into diagnostic mode the 'RD BATT' always = 0.

If I connect it to my laptop I get the charging icon but it never
animates or charges. This means the battery has 0% charge.
It won't show up in itunes without some charge so I can't restore
it or whatever.

It looks like the battery is dead after 18 months. Is there anything
else I can try or whet are my options now?

Thank you.

Sure way to kill a LI-ion battery. The battery controller will try to
prevent a discharge to instantly deadly levels, but selfdischarge
continues regardless.

You should charge to something like 60% for storage and put it in the
fridge. Note that selfdischarge goes up as the battery ages, so if you
started with a fully charged battery and it was dead being left alone
for a month, the battery was probably going to be dead pretty soon
anyway.

Your iPod Battery is definately dead! If you have AppleCare, they'll
possibly replace the battery for free. Many companies will replace your
batteries for a small fee. One thing the people at the Genius Bar will
always tell you is, "Always plug your ipod in when your isn't in use."
Unlike most laptop batteries, plugging the ipod in at half charge or
where ever the charge is at will not affect the battery's life.
