In the trial version of this editor, if 'Import from DVD' is selected for
capture, then the appropriate window does appear, but the 'Import' button
is greyed out and inoperable.
Anyone know if that is just an instance of 'trial crippling', i.e. it is
in the full version, and not something one has to buy in as an extra?
(I ask because I read somewhere that another editor (Pinnacle) has some
features which don't work unless separately paid for.)

You are not using it correctly. The IMPORT button is to import from the
DVD. The other button lets you import from a DVD structure on the hard
drive. Both work. The IMPORT button will non-grey as soon as you put a
valid disc in your DVD drive.
