every time I do this, the same thing comes up, my computer has been like

software to it. The computer is new and was purchased in march 2006.
there is also a load of writing in the top left corner with a black
background.

Try booting up from your OS X DVD and then run Disk Utility and repair
the disk.

P.S. I've added uk.comp.sys.mac as I see you're in the UK and there's
quite a helpful bunch of UK Mac folks who hang out there.

You might also try a "safe boot" by holding down the shift key while
starting the system. This process will limit the loading of kernel
extensions and system startup applications to the minimum required by
the OS.

A couple of things: 1. Reset the NVRAM (CMD-OPT-O-F) and/or ZAP the PRAM (CMD-OPT-P-R). See http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=2238http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=42642 This will clear up any possible corruption in these that might be contributing to this problem. 2. Boot from your install CD/DVD and run the Disk Diagnostics and repair any problems. Also, run repair permissions (just to be safe). 3. If you have it, run DiskWarrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to validate the disk and (with TT) run hardware diags 4. Remove and reseat the RAM (if you added any). After all this, try re-installing OSX (archive and install).... At least those are the steps I would take... -Stephen -- Space Age Cybernomad Stephen Adams malchus842SP@AMgmail.com (remove SPAM to reply)
Is this an Intel Mac or a PowerPC Mac?
Like stephen said: Try and reset the NVRAM and clear the PRAM. Though
these will only work on PowerPC Macs.
1. On the Intel Macs, to reset the NVRAM, at startup, hold down
CMD+ALT+P+R (a bit confusing I know)
2. Try safe boot. (Holding down "Shift" at startup)
3. If the computer doesn't startup off the install disk, hold down the
CMD+S keys until you see a black screen with a bunch of writing. Once
you see something like "root%" type "fsck -fy" then press enter. If it
says "the volume macintosh HD appers to be ok" hold down the power
button until the computer shuts down.
4. If none of the suggestions so far have worked also try Apple
Hardware Test. Once it starts up press CMD+L to loop the test and let
it run the extended test about 5 times.
If all else has failed, try and archive and install Mac OS X
hold down the power button until the computer shuts down
Much better: Type "boot" and hit Enter..
(Though it might be "reboot", I don't remember now. Try it if boot does
nothing.)

Thanks Jon! I just checked a few sites, I and the command is "reboot"
or CTRL+D to boot up.

This is a kernal panic. It is a "nice view" telling you that something
bad in hardware or software has gone bad.

Now, this is a little worse... since the OS software was not able to
hold on, and present the "nice" Kernal Panic screen. Chance are that
you have a hardware problem (check the RAM first), or a serious
software issue (serious enough to ''block" the standard panic steps).
After trying the other non-intrusive steps, inculding the Diagnostics
test (put in the os disk and hold the d key ... for intel iMacs), and
it passes the hardware test, then try an archive and install. This will
reinstall the OS without effecting your peronal files and info.
If all else fails,.. it is under warranty, just send it in. Beware
though, software issues are not covered under warranty. We also handle
warranty service... if interested.
