I am having severe problems with my Netgear router and am dissatisfied with their support.
Basically I have an erratic ISP, and a genuine but limited computer supplier. Netgear DG834G is my router using it with 2 HP Pavillion laptops and Windows XP SP2.
I wanted this router so that I could use a wireless network in my house , and this worked for a while. However the ISP service was erratic and I wrote to Netgear. They told me to enable WEP security. I did this. Then the ISP changed their server and from then on I got limited or no connectivity.
I am now using the LAN and sometimes that isn’t working. The wireless is disabled and I have removed the wireless connections, but every time I look at those connections I have a problem connecting at all and usually restart.
The router supplier recognised limited or no connectivity as a security issue but was unable to remove the WEP button. He disabled it but it came back, and then as usual decided the problem had been solved. It hadn’t been but I could only tell that with time.
Even though the Netgear support gave me the security instructions that caused my problem they have not made significant efforts to resolve it.
Hence I have been forced onto the good offices of the enthusiasts on the forums.
I don’t know where the problem is.
1) Do I need to remove the security from my computer and how do I do that?
2) If I reset the router and reconfigure it will the problem go?
3) Does the ISP’s server hold any settings other than the user name and password for ADSL access?
