I've got a couple of Pace DSL4000 STBs. I've had them for ages, I picked
them up from an auction of junk.
I remember being able to get to the supervisor prompt and run BASIC
programs. Is there anything else interesting that I could do with these?
I remember not being able to bring up a RISCOS desktop. Being able to
transfer files over the Ethernet interface might be interesting.
Otherwise, does anybody else want them? One of them at least is just
sitting in my shed. If anybody else wants a play, I'd probably part with
them for the cost of the postage.

Switch it on and hold down select on the front panel. Keep holding it down
until you get to the Engineering Menu start page. From there, you can
configure the network and stuff. If you have an NFS server handy, you need
to create a mount with the !Boot renamed to !NFSBoot. That should get you a
little further.
Needless to say, it probably won't boot from a standard desktop !Boot.

You should be able to get a browser up on them I think and run them that
way as a thin client. I *think* you can fire MPEGs at them too, although
that may only be within a browser window.
Need to look into this myself one day, as we have a few such boxes over
at Bletchley and they'd make quite nice little boxes for playing
informational videos from a central server.

Don't they require Oracle for video?
I think they support Oracle OVS 3.2 video server (I can't be bothered to
switch mine on and find out but that's way out of date and not worth
thinking about. They should also work for multicast video. VLC (used to be
called VideoLAN) is the thing to look for to act as a multicast server.
Unfortunately, I can't tell you about the APIs for latching onto the video
streams because they are confidential. I can't remember if there's anything
in the ROM which'll let you do that - I don't think there is (unless you
count TestTask, which I also can't tell you about).
