Default editing a shape

A coworker of mine has recently left and I've sorta inherited some of
their responsibilities. Among other things, I'm supposed to create
fliers. Rather than do this from scratch, I'm just going to reuse
existing material. Unfortunately, some of the existing material is in
a form that I'm not really sure how to work with. For instance...

http://www.geocities.com/terra1024/shape.ai

Only half of the shape is showing (I'd like to make the whole shape
appear) yet there is no clipping mask or layer hiding it. When I
"ungroup" it, however, another layer appears - a layer that seems to be
serving a purpose similar to but not identical to clipping masks.
Unfortunately, the color scheme of the shape changes quite a bit, as
well, when I do the ungroup.

Long story short, I don't have any clue how this was done. Any ideas?
