I subsequently select the option (4) for other drive type and get:
HFORM failed: Number too big at line 1820
Using !Hform (version 1.78) from RISCOS2 Apps Disk 2:
================================================== ===
With disc (1) RISCOS3 stays a long time at the "Initialising..." screen. :4
is displayed on the icon bar. HFORM gives the following error:
Disc error 02 at :4/00000000
With disc (2) RISCOS3 stays a "normal" length of time at the
"Initialising..." screen. :4 is displayed on the icon bar. HFORM lets me
select (3) for other drive type and subsequently put in the geometry values
as reported above. When I enter 16 heads I get the message:
WARNING - since the drive has more that 8 heads, the computer's 'low write
current/head select 3' links may need changing.
I enter the rest of the geometry values but don't know what the following
are, so I leave them as defaults:
Low current cylinder ?1023
Precompensation cylinder ?128
Parking cylinder ?611
It then *seems* to format the disc, counting up to the high cylinder with
the drive ticking. It verifies fine, too. Subsequently, however, it fails
on "Writing root directory" with the error:
Attempt to use badly nested error handler (or corrupt R13).
Bad drive

Hello! I'm struggling with getting a hard disc to function in my A3000. The specifications are as follows: Acorn A3000, 4MB Memory, RISCOS 3.11, Castle Technologies IDE Mini-podule. I have the following hard drives available: =========================================== (1) IBM Model DVAA-2810, 810MB, 1571 Cylinders, 16 Heads, 63 Sectors/track. (Taken working from a Fujitsu ICL Ergolite S) (2) Toshiba HDD2910, 2167MB, 4200 Cylinders, 16 Heads, 63 Sectors/track. (Taken from a working Apple PowerMac G3 WallStreet) (3) IBM DBOA-2540, 540MB, 1050 Cylinders, 16 Heads, 63 Sectors/track. (Taken from a working Fujitsu ICL Ergolite S) I have a copies of !Hform from both the RISCOS2 and RISCOS3 Apps Disk 2.
Try Hform 2.56 (12 Apr 2002), downloadable from erm... can't remember,
but try Drobe.

And don't bother with option 2!

Thanks Alan! Unfortunately, both !Hform 2.56, and !Hform 2.51 (located here: http://support.riscos.com/Support/Updates/) only run on RISCOS 3.6 or later. I'm running RISCOS 3.11 - this is the latest version that my computer will support.
Fair enough. I'd forgotten that.
The rest of your message suggests there are serious problems with the
850M disc, and as you say I think 512MB (approx) is the upper limit.
Even vaguer recollection says that you need to partition the disc
before formatting the partition (if it's over 512MB), and that can't
be done with HForm. I might be wrong - it's been a long time.

I agree about the 850MB drive, although I watched it boot Windows 98 before
putting it in the A3000.
Would I be able to partition the disc to 512MB (i.e. A single 512 or smaller
partition on the disc) using FDISK.exe in one of the Fuji ICL laptops I
pulled them from? Are Acorn partitions different in any way?

[Results from various version of HFORM]
Did the mini podule come with its own formatter, or do you know HFORM is
supposed to be used? When was the last time the interface worked?

Yes it can, its not partitioning just formatting the disc to less than its
full capacity.

Yes completely different.
All you need to do in HFORM is choice a custom shape and use the appropriate
number of tracks to make keep the size just under 512MB.

I have no way of knowing this unfortunately. It was bought from eBay, but
came packaged in its original shrinkwrap. I don't know if there was an
original formatter, and Castle technologies haven't responded to my emails
enquiring after one.
It certainly "ticks all the boxes" with regard to what it displays in
*podules and *rommodules, and it does appear in the icon bar, and allows me
to verify the disk (2GB Apple drive only). !Hform accesses the disk, it
just can't complete its run on formatting it.
