Default PowerBook G4 AirPort hardware has "disappeared"?

On Monday evening my AirPort was working fine. On Tuesday morning
when I switched the laptop on, I noticed the AirPort symbol had
disappeared from the menu bar. The AirPort still shows up in System
Preferences -> Network, but it cannot be turned on or configured: I
get an InternetConnect window with "Status: No AirPort Hardware Found"
at the bottom.

This line appears several times in /var/log/system.log every time I
boot the computer:

/Applications/Internet Connect.app/Contents/MacOS/Internet Connect: WirelessAirPortDeviceNameCopy(): no AirPort driver found

I tried loading the drivers

# kextload AppleAirPort.kext
kextload: AppleAirPort.kext loaded successfully

# kextload AppleAirPort2.kext
kextload: AppleAirPort2.kext loaded successfully

# kextstat |grep ir

but it still doesn't work.

I'd appreciate any suggestions for fixing or debugging this.

Thanks,
Adam
