Hi,

I want to use Dell optical disks in my blade 1000 system. Does anybody know
this will work or not?
The Dell disks are Seagate ST373307FC.
I know Dell produces some of the seagate disks with their own firmware in it
and I believe it's called "green label". Anybody who knows how I can
distinguish a real seagate from a dell-firmware-equipped hd from the
outside?

Well the Seagate ST373307FC is one of the drives Sun sells for the Sun Blade
1000.
If it's a generic drive it may not be partitioned the same as a Sun OEM
drive and wouldn't have Sun firmware.
Sun puts their part number on the label and sometimes even has a Sun logo.
I'd assume Dell would do something similar to distinguish their drive from a
generic Seagate.

Dell doesn't produce disks. What Dell does is ordering disks with
modified firmware. In case of Dell, the modification usually is limited
to a different ID string.

To recognize if it's a Dell firmware'd disk, look on the label, you
should see a FIRMWARE DExx on it, (xx being 18 in me case), the DE means
Dell...

There are tools to wipe that out and restore a generic firmware, not
sure if you can apply the Sun firmware back to it after the fact(which
was delivered in on of the Solaris patches). I decided to not take the
risk to mangle the disk by playing with firmware tools...

In fact, I found the Compaq disks worked fine if they were first labeled
in an Ultra class machine then moved to the older SPARCstation 20.

So whilst I can't guarantee it, you will probably find the Dell disks
will work fine.
