Default RPC disc and CD problem

I am trying to add an IDE CD to my spare RPC, running RO3.7. Up to now
it has had a SCSI CD, and an 840M Quantum disc. It worked fine, except
that the CD wouldn't read burned CDs, only pressed ones, and I was
getting short of disc space.

I first installed a Maxtor 3G disc as slave, ran HForm, then copied
everything across. No problem.

I added a CD in place of the Maxtor, as slave. No problem.

Then I made the Maxtor the master and removed the Quantum. No problem.

Then I added a CD to the IDE bus, as slave. Three different CD drives
gave "CD drive not found". Two were Samsung, different models, one LG.
*cdfs followed by *cddevices produces an empty list of CD drives.

I tried a Maxtor 20G disc. Same symptoms.

I tried making the CD the master, and the disc the slave. It worked
with the Quantum, not with either Maxtor.

I've tried 40- and 80-wire IDE cables (a very long shot) but it makes
no difference.

It seems that I cannot run a CD with the Maxtor discs I have
available. It does work with a 4G Quantum Bigfoot, but as that is a
5.25 inch disc, it won't go in the case along with a CD. (It's single
slice machine.)

With the bits I have to hand, the only remaining option is to put a
SCSI disc in with an IDE CD. I am not quite that desperate (yet).

Check the jumpers (and drive label) very carefully; some Maxtor drives
have different jumper positions for "Master with 2nd HD as slave" and
"Master with CD as slave", while others will only work with a CD slave
if you put the HD jumper in the "only drive on cable" position, or
other bizarre arrangements. You may be able to find detailed jumper
information for a specific drive online be searching for documents
containing the model number. They can /usually/ be made to work, but
some drives do sulk....

Chris.
