Without knowing exactly what you're going for, maybe this will work..
Make a stroke in the shape& size of the border you want.. if it's
thicker, the effect might show better.
Object -> Path -> Outline Stroke (that turns your stroke into a shape
with a fill)
Effect -> Stylize -> Inner Glow (and then play with the methods & color
& "size" of the glow)
That helps add a little 3-D-ness to the shape, but I dunno if that's
the effect you're looking for.
Using the 3d extrude tools in CS(x) with a round edge may work too.
