Problems printing to different trays with HP9050DN
Hello -
I have an MS-Access 2003 program that I am trying to get to print to
different trays for an invoicing application. There are 2 projects on
1 PC running on top of Access-2003, and the printer is the HP 9050DN.
The problem is that I need one of the projects to print to Tray 3 for
one kind of invoice, and then then the other project needs to print to
Tray 4 for their other invoice. I don't know if this is just a
limitation of the Windows Print Manager (Using WinXP and I think SP2).
I can get it to print to tray 3, but not tray 4. In playing around
with the configuration a little more - and in making Trays 1 and 2 Any
Type and Any Size - the printer now prompts for which tray to use
(which is a temporary work around, but not an acceptable solution).
Any ideas on this would be really appreciated. Here is how I had it
configured before I went with the printer promting the operator to
select which tray to print from...
Tray 1 - Any Size/Any Type
Tray 2 - Letter/Plain
Tray 3 - Letter/Preprinted
Tray 4 - Letter/Letterhead

Whilst I am not familiar with this printer model I am with many others. What
you are trying to do is almost standard for many workplace environments.
1. Set the internal printer options as you have indicated.
2. Set the printer driver properties AND preferences so that they match the
printer settings.
3. Set the paper type in each of the EXCEL applications to suit, I am sure
there will be a paper or media type setting in the printer driver.
If there is something strange about the driver and the above does not work then
install a second copy of the printer and name it something logical. Set the old
driver options to suit application 1 and the second driver options to suit
application 2. Set the appropriate driver as the default in each application.

There is a good point - and I tried that (setting up a second copy of
the driver), but I could not get this to work (neither by trying to
copy the existing driver - which is not an available option from the
right-click menu, nor from simply trying to install another copy of the
driver).
Also - and I am sorry I didn't mention this before. This is the 9050
driver using the PCL6 version.
P.S. This isn't in Excel - it's in Access 2003.

Sorry about the Excel typo.
No you can't copy printers by right clicking. What stops you from installing a
second copy of the printer? I have done this for literally dozens of different
HP printers but not this model. In fact with some applications it is essential
to do this.
