I have grandchildren in Virginia 400 miles away. I understand that mydaughter in Virginia could hook up a camera (webcam) to her computer andtransmit to me live images of the children to be viewed on my computer.I have no clue what is needed and how to do that. Can someone help with a step-by-step explanation

Both Yahoo and MSN offer free instant messenger programs with webcam
capabilities. Microsoft even sells a couple webcams to go along with
MSN Messenger. Most of the webcams are USB, so you install a driver
off a CD that comes with it, plug it into a USB port and check the
Messenger options to adjust settings the way you prefer.

http://get.live.com/messenger/ - Free Microsoft Windows Live Messenger
(MSN). I believe that one requires Windows XP, but their older version
doesn't.
The older versions of MSN Messenger are available here. I have used
MSN Messenger 7.0 on a Windows 98 system w/o problems.

Here is a web page showing the Microsoft webcams. Alot of other
companies make them also, but this gives you an example.
