Default dmfe weirdness on Netra X1

Are there known issues with dmfe interfaces on Netra X1s or other
machines? I have basically endless trouble with a netra which seems to
get into some fucked state where it can't see any traffic at all. This
has happened with several switches, currently a Netgear 10/100/1000
one. Duplex etc is all fine (they both agree 100/full). The switch
things either the link is flapping or the machine is transmitting all
the time. The machine sees nothing, logs no error, and does not think
it is sending any traffic, so I think there is some low-level ethernet
thing going on. It may be that the machine I have is just hosed I
suppose.

I guess looking at it with a managed switch would tell me more, but
it's a domestic box and I could buy an x86 machine for less than a
managed switch.
