Default How to copy DVD

Newbie question, just picked up a dvd burner and a video capture device. Two
questions please. I have a PowerMac with a Lacie 8xburner (Pioneer 107), I
have Toast titaniam, and Mac the Ripper.

First, I want to backup the DVDs I've purchased for the kids before they wreck
the discs. I can copy the disc to harddrive but it comes in at 7.9GB and the
disc is 4.7. How do I go about making a copy?

Second, I want to put VHS tapes on DVD. I can record to harddrive in DV or MOV
format. The problem is the size. A five minute recording eats 1GB. How do I
go about making the files smaller and in a format the DVD player will read?

Thanks.

Let's stop with all this lying ass bullshit about 'backing up DVD's because of my destructive brats"!!! Just
STOP!!! Do you have any idea how many times this tired line has been used as a reason to copy DVD's?? Do
you think you're the first lowlife with illegal purposes in mind? DVD's don't NEED to be copied! They're
cheap enough you can buy multiples. If you can't control your brats, then put them up for adoption!
I resent having to pay more for stuff because you want to make a buck off illegal copies!! You got that?

Welcome. First off, ignore the ranting response from the hysterical inbred
elsewhere in this thread. The rest of us are willing to help. You can
also find a wealth of information on these topics at
http://www.dvdrhelp.com.

Right, you can't do it that way. Instead, download the free and wonderful
DVD Shrink, the best DVD copying program on the planet:

Record to hard drive in DV format, just like you were doing. Then you'll
need software to convert that DV footage into mpeg2 and burn it to DVD.
There are many commercial programs that do this; I myself use Pinnacle
Studio 8 (newest version is 9). There are probably shareware or even
freeware programs that do this also, but I've never used any so I'm not sure
what to recommend.

Good luck,

Mike

I know probably less than 5% what Mike does about this topic - oh, hell,
less than 1% - but I DO know that DVD Shrink isn't available for the Mac.
Take a good long look around http://www.dvdrhelp.com, as he suggested - I'm
pretty sure there's a section on that site devoted to the steps necessary
for Mac users (like me!) to backup their DVDs.

If all you retarded fucks had left this group to discussion of
movies, as it was meant to be, the group would not be flooded with rip
it retards. They have their own groups, but some retarded fucks seem
to think that such discussions are OK here. They are not.

And yes, most of these retarded bastards are making dvds from DL'd
images or rentals, not for their kids, and should find their asses in
fine city one day.

To the tune of ten thousand dollars. For each offense.

Maximum line length in Usenet is 72 characters. Bone up on Usenet,
since you seem to want to do things correctly. Then post again when
you have a few more clues.

Bah, I'm sorry - my bad. I completely brain-farted his statement that he
owns a Mac. Yes, DVDRHelp it is, then, because I have no idea what's
available for Macs.

Default How to copy DVD

dvdrhelp.com is a good source to start, but the amount of information
can be overwhelming.

It took me about 2 years to perfect it. Most of my earlier video
archives, I thought was good enough, are no longer acceptable to me.
I have done some ripping of DVDs but will never do it again. Reasons
are: too time comsuming, too resource intensive and mistakes happened
more often than not.

My DVD archives are mostly done in capturing it through a TV card. I
got a wonderful card which allows me to capture it in DVD or near DVD
quality with no less than 640x480 resolution. And no one can tell the
difference. I then use VirtualDub and re-encode the captured mpe-1
file to mpeg-4 file format. Each dvd+r media can hold good quality
video up to 11 tv episodes. But I keep it to no more than 6 episodes
or 2 feature length movies.
